I've been swept away into the Christmas frenzy - my days are spent running around the Holiday town with no more than a moment to enjoy the little things that make this season so wonderous. I've also been trying to paint like a fiend, hoping to squeeze out all the inspiration this time of year provides me. I wish there were four more weeks before Christmas.

I know this will be my last post before Christmas, so I wish all of you the warmest of Holidays, Happy Christmas and do hope everyone's well and warm and happy out there!!

A Book Called Frohlich

I've been super shirkful on the blog posts lately, I know ~ but for good reason! My next solo show will be comin up sooner than I know I'll be expecting (August 2012) and it's got me workin' day and night ~~~~ but ALSO, I'm working on my first Art Book...

It's in the works now officially, and we're aiming for it's release at SD Comic Con '12! I'm so very excited and have been going thru all my works and sketchbooks and photos and my face can't stop beaming...

The way I work is so forward focused that I hardly ever look back and truly SEE where I've been and what I've accomplished. The process of the book is forcing me to do just that, and I'm so humbled. Another year has gone by for Baby Tattooville - making this the fifth annual! Bob Self (of Baby Tattoo Books) celebrated by featuring 30 artists instead of the usual 10 - 12 he's done each year - I was stoked to be among them...

Before arriving at the Mission Inn in Riverside, I packed up the 50+ small prints I made for the giveaway bags each payed attendee receives at the end of the event on Sunday. I look forward to the giveaway bags because 1.) I love free stuff myself and 2.) It's a great excuse to work on something Halloween themed which I lovelovelove!

The weekend kicks off with the welcome panel, (which I get real shy about) and since this year there was 30 of us - there was a back row which I found much more comfortable. This was my view...

From there, the artists signed official business and prints before everyone went on to celebrate the best way they know how! This event isn't strictly supervised or spent quietly sipping wine - everyone that's involved get's to spend it in whatever way they wish. (A "Secret Society" should lend itself some secrets now and then, right?) That's just part of the genius that brings everyone back each year i think...

Now that it's October (almost half way thru!), I intend to riddle this blog with Halloween. Here's the Baby Tattooville giveaway piece that I did - each of the 50 attendees get's a bag-o-loot for the weekend, I made this into 50 small prints.

Rubbish Rehab and Me

I can finally share a project that's secretly been in the works for a bit now! Rubbish Rehab kindly asked me if I would be interested in collaborating with them on one of their beautiful pieces - I really couldn't say yes fast enough! We chose my painting Baron of the Deep and they did their magic, and PRESTO! Available HERE at their lovely shop (where I want at least a dozen items!).

They literally finished it yesterday - haven't even gotten a chance to take professional pictures yet, but I didn't want to wait! They put all their love into each unique piece of antique furniture, so there's just the one piece available.

I'm super pleased with the final result, and I hope to collaborate with them again on a few more of their findings in the future.

New To Me

As I mentioned real quick in my last post, I'm starting work on my next big body of work. I usually have a way of starting - if you're a long time reader here you're familiar with my process - but this time around things are lookin a little different...

I would by this time (I've started the first big painting), already have a few paintings sketched out in my sketchbook that I could jump onto probably at this point. But I kind of don't. And while the insecure painter inside my head wants to freak out, the MATURE painter inside my head thinks it's a breath of fresh air! I'm ready to J U S T E X P L O R E. I have a solid idea of what "theme" I would like to paint around, but the emotions and the story are a little loose right now, and I'm really liking it. I'm gonna use it as a way to challenge each piece - to REALLY push past my "safe zones" and trust myself. I will say this tho - it WILL BE my strongest body of work to date, and I will be kickin out the jams...

San Diego Comic Con is upon us!! As those of you who are attending & making out your schedule of signings/purchases/or what have you, keep these three beauties in mind! I'll be around Saturday for signings, but you could visit them any day you like...

SKETCH THEATRE has put together a book of The Art Of Sketch Theatre, published by Baby Tattoo Books and will be releasing it at Comic Con! I'm so thrilled to be a part of the book, I'll be signing and sketching at Booth 4712 Saturday at 11am. It'll be great to start the day with them (Sketch Theatre and Baby Tattoo Books) because I love them both dearly...(go see one of my videos now!!!)

Let Me Introduce You...

...to "Bunny Ride, Go!!" my very first vinyl art figure by 3D Retro (sculpted by October Toys)!! The big release is at San Diego Comic Con at the end of this month - I'm so excited I can't sit still!!

Bunny Ride, Go has been in the works for a while now, it was really hard to keep it a secret! She's designed from a painting of mine titled Darkness Keeps A Steady Hold (above). Bringing her to life was really fun! Since the whole process was new to me, I really put my faith in 3D Retro and October Toys and I'm BEYOND THRILLED with the outcome!!

I can't get over the glossy bright candy-colors - it stayed so true to my work. And wait til you guys see the grin on the Bunny Ride...

Each figure comes with a tiny strawberry print (that makes me squeal!) to boot!!

And Such Is Life

As I mentioned in my last post, the Corey Helford Gallery turns 5 years old this month. To celebrate (as only the CHG does), they're putting on the MOST FABULOUS group show of the year. Here is my painting titled "And Such Is Life", it's acrylic on wood and measures 40"x27" (inside frame).

This piece represents for me not only a turning point in my work, but the representation of growth and support I have drawn from my time with the Corey Helford Gallery. The last five years have taken me to new places, brought me close to new friends, and blossomed my inspiration for creating in a way I could have never dreamed. This piece embodies a swirl of life and love in my heart that I have felt in these experiences, and I am extremely proud of what it is.

I thank the Corey Helford Gallery for all they have done not only for me, but for my contemporaries, my friends, and the art community. I am humbled and more so, proud to be part of their family.

Show opens Friday, July 1st at the COREY HELFORD GALLERY in Culver City. This is gonna be BIG ~ if you can, come on by for the five year festivities!!

I've fallen in love with Instagram just recently (like I just joined this week). I was hesitant at first - knowing that the time I spend on my IPhone (on Twitter and Facebook and blogs and emails and Solitaire) is increasingly cutting into the time I spend looking at a real persons face as they talk to me! Buuuut....

...if there's one thing I love about all this social networking in my face - it's photo sharing (honestly, that's the main reason I have this blog!). I love photos, and even moreso - I love the look of old photos. ...Enter Instagram.

Building A Girl Nest {Years Ago}

Growing up I always wanted to be an artist ~ I've drawn all my life (blahblahblah), different things at different times. But, as a teenager in the 90's {High School} I really didn't spend much time drawing. I had two older sisters ~ which means I had access to A LOT of fashion and movie magazines at that time. Well as any youngest sibling will do, I took from my older sisters what I could, if only to "borrow" for just a moment (with nary a return in my mind). But as it was so long ago, I feel I can finally tell the story of the nest I was building out of torn pages from those magazines ~ a photo collection/obsession of girls...girls and more girls...

I collected images of models I loved at the time in the beginning. I remember sneaking into my sister's closet where she had STACKS of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and later Jane and what have you. When she wasn't home, I would hoard a stack and start rummaging through, ripping and tearing as I went...{she's gonna grab my hair for this}...

At first, I only collected a few images of Cindy Crawford and some of the Super Models of the times ~ and folded them into my drawer so my sister wouldn't know I defaced her property (yeah right, like she couldn't guess who it was). I loved the pictures of their hair and makeup and clothes and maybe the way the photo was shot. I was attracted to it all, and as time went on, the stacks in my drawers became too large for me to keep sneaky, so I started a folder...

This went on, for years and years {well into the 2000s} when I could buy my own and not sneak and feel guilty {yeah right, I never felt guilty ~ she deserved it and so did I ~ haaha!}. I have 5 largely packed 3" binders now, only kept at bay because my obsession took a break in mid to late 2000s when I wasn't feelin the ads and the girls weren't wearing that much makeup and I canceled all my subscriptions.

So now looking back and leafing through the thousands of pages in the folders, I feel like I may have been building a nest...

A nest of inspiration or direction for my latter years (now), for my art and what not ~ without even knowing it.

Picture overload? I don't think so. Girls adore girls when they're not being catty and mean...

Whatever the thought was then for collecting and keeping all this and more, I'm glad I did it, and I'm glad I never tossed these puppies out.

Cotton Candy Machine's Tiny Trifecta Opening

The CRAZY talented Tara McPherson is celebrating the opening of her first store Cotton Candy Machine in New York this coming weekend! She's asked 100 artist's to create a piece of art to sell for $100 on the 100th day of the year!!! (WHAAAAAT?) It's true, and I'm stoked. The tiny pieces will be snapped up so fast, so if you're interested, here's some info (artist list). Bleed Out, Poor Heart

I went out to Camille Rose Garcia's show Snow White And The Black Lagoon a few weeks back, now I can finally report...

I've mentioned in this blog {and interviews} a few dozen times or so how perfectly Camille's work hits the spot for me. I love love love {as I've said} a few other artists' work, but for me, Camille's work really rings every bell in my head and without sounding too cheesy {too late?}, as I went around the gallery taking in her latest and greatest, I found myself holding my breath as my eyes scraped every inch of each painting.

If art is important to you in your life, then you know the importance of SPENDING TIME with someone's work and how it gets inside you. For me, to simply glance at a painting online,in a book or even real quick in person, it doesn't have the same effect than if you have the chance to really spend time with it {in person}. It's almost like, the more time spent around it, the more the silent works spill out the secrets and emotions the artist had quietly painted into it. It has a chance to become more than just a really appealing assemblage of imagery.

So to spend any amount of time with Camille's work, my senses are heightened and ready to catch any quiet lyrics that may come my way. I love her for what she does. The End.

And if you don't mind, it was onto more inspired times at the Adam Wallacavage and Henry Lewis show at Corey Helford Gallery.

A great crowd also turned out to take in Adam's chandeliers and Henry's paintings this passed Saturday night.

I'm feeling a lot blessed by the life I was given ~ the people I have the pleasure of sharing it with and the passion, love and heartache they spill out of themselves so that someone like me can take from it and better express MY passion, love and heartache.

This coming Saturday kicks off "Lyric", a group exhibition curated by Glenn Barr at 323 East Gallery in Royal Oak, MI. When Glenn hit me up, I was stoked and went right to work on my piece for the show...

Initially, I thought about what sound in music I respond to most ~ which is difficult {obviously} to pin point and narrow down, but the first thing that came to mind was the sort of haunting sound of a band like Squirrel Nut Zippers...

So from there, I think of how I can illustrate that "kind" of music, and it's obvious to me that it's gonna be ghosts...I love music, and as I've said before, it's huge to my process and inspiration {and sanity}, so making this piece was super fun and I loved every minute.

I can feel a stew of New abrewin' as of late, here in my old four walls. I'm feelin a bit anxious, ready to start a new story and my next big body of work! And whenever this feeling feverishly grabs me by the hair, I tend to start reassembling my desk, and my walls ... (and my closet...) This is a good time, I'm getting excited, I'm getting restless!!

I've found some new friends to sit for me while I work away the hours, here's my new Snoopy rip-off that I love to death, and above him is my babiest donkey that I saw at the antique shop and DIDN'T BUY until I absolutely HAD to go back two weeks later. (To my happy heart's surprise, he had been waiting for me the whole time!) Also, note my new stupid water mug that's so lame it rules...

But what I'm REALLY stoked on is my beloved Miss Mindy Moon Face that makes me squeal every time I walk past her!! I remember when I first layed eyes on this pretty puppy at Mindy's studio ~ I was drawn to her like candy, I immediately started scheming schemes on how I could call her mine...and now SHES MINES.

And so, the beginning stages of my next series is on it's mark, accompanied by my hearts daily desire ~ See's Peppermint Candies. (Know that if I put on some extra fluff, the culprit has a face.)

And in news outside these four walls, I SO look forward to "Snow White And The Black Lagoon", Camille Rose Garcia's upcoming show Saturday (March 12th)! In art, she is my Pink Floyd.

This past weekend was the opening of In The Nursery, the latest installment at the Corey Helford Gallery. My painting "White Fawn Sugar Scape" rests there with all the others, and what a show it was!!

The night was filled with such sweet sweet pleasures, from such sweet sweet ladies...as I reluctantly slipped into my 35th year on this earth. A gift from my darlin' Lola, thee cutest set of darlin' ditties my eyes have seen! She's the flea's knees AND the fat's pajamas...

The show looked so good, and all the girls did too ~ go see the show yourself online or in person before it comes down February 9th!!!

Finally~ I can show you my new painting that will be part of the In The Nursery show at Corey Helford Gallery this coming Saturday (Jan. 29th).

I worked long and hard on this piece, I wanted to get it JUST RIGHT and I'm thrilled with how it came out! The inspiration behind it was honestly lovely Christmas lights and white snowy decor during the time I began (early November) hoping for a white, wintery, January feel.

It was on my easel for sooo long, now here without it, my place seems a little empty. She's framed and waiting to be hung in the gallery amongst some of her favorite artists and friends, and hopefully some of you can join me for the opening night festivities!!

As we've turned the corner into a new year and new decade, I find myself searching for new inspiration. New New New New. I was all set to do a wrap up of 2010 (like I did for 2009 here), but can't stop myself from looking forward - not backward. Even tho last year was an unbelievable year for me (museum show in Bristol, big trip to England, huge solo show @ CHG, lots and lots of play time with artists I LOVE, another rad Baby Tattooville and so on and so on...), right now I wanna throw myself into a fresh new beginning ~ and when I say that, I'm mostly talking about art ~ and in turn that means my life.

I do wanna thank each and every one of you that comes and visits me here. I hope you all made it into the new year safe and happy and ready to get rowdy. Let's do it.

As Christmas is LESS than two weeks away, I have less and less time to spare. Forgive me these posts - but I want to just pop in, say hello and throw out some inspired wisps now and again. Here are some of my most important fellows that help me in almost ALL of my projects and processes. The little red and pink watercolor pencils are the loves of my life, aside from the brown colerase pencil. Without them, I'd be broken...

I would consider myself an illustrator (a draw~er) before I would say I'm a painter, and these tools in my hands make me feel fullfilled - as lame as that sounds. Drawing for me is seriously where it's at.

And if you can't make a mess at the dinner table once in a while, well then, what can you do. Happy Christmas!!

Whoa, this weekend was chalk-full, and as promised, here are the photos I took of The Fighter preview that I did the boxing gloves for - and then some!

It started off with a preview of the movie (The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale). It was really good. It was great to see a movie in a theatre where the crowd was really into it AND respectful - such a nice environment.

The afterparty was at And & Still just down the street where they had the artist's boxing gloves for charity. It was a good crowd and a good time! Aaaannnnd, when you get a chance, soon, go see Travis Louie's "The Ghost Of Delilah and Other Stories" show at Gallery 1988!

There's always much needed silliness when we get together with other artists...it's what keeps up comin back for more!!

We had a quick stop at Kat Von D's Wonderland art and gift shop Sunday where we got to peek in at Kevin Llewellyn's art work (!amazing!) and the super fun window displays outside. (...i'm a nerd for that stuff...)

It's good to have a guided tour with the woman that kicked out the jams there and made it all possible, Chantal Menard. She's such a flippin doll it's not even funny...

In all the rain and wind, we found ourselves at Miss Mindy and Rick O'Brien's Christmas Dr. Sketchy's. We bundled up with hot chocolate and candy canes..

Some excitement broke out from the fire pit - but Mindy was on the scene with her do rag and fire hose - she caught the flames before they reached the people - and was cute as a button with each little peep!

They had the lovely models wrapped in ribbons suspended from the trees just above the drawing crowd...you could only find this in the imaginings of Bob Self & the O'Brien's Dr. Sketchy's.

If you're no stranger to my blog, you know I love Christmas Decorations and the such, and at Mindy's you can't get far from the red & the white, which makes me love her more and more.

I'm LOVING all the Christmas festivities around the blogs as of late, and I have much to post of my own in the coming weeks. I hope all is calm - all is bright out there with all you warm, lovely people.

Boxing Gloves For Charity

I was invited to participate in this Saturday's "Blood, Sweat & Art" charity event celebrating Mark Wahlberg & Christian Bale's new movie The Fighter. For this event, the artists were provided with a pair of brand new, cherry red boxing gloves to do what they do on em, and that's what I did...

It isn't every day I get to paint on gloves, and while I was initially iffy & hesitant, it really turned out to be super fun and kinda freeing. I'll post pics of the other pieces and the event this weekend. For more information, see post below!

I had the chance to do something super weird (for me) for "Blood, Sweat and Art: An Artistic Celebration of "Irish" Micky Ward". I can't share photos with you YET, but I will as soon as I get the green light. The fact that it's for charity (100%) is the cherry on top, so if you can, make it this Saturday for a FREE advanced screening of the movie, then art and cookies afterward. We couldn't be more excited to be working with Paramount Pictures and director David O. Russell on a screening and art event this Saturday, December 4th in Los Angeles! And all of you are invited.

Join us on Saturday night, December 4th at 6PM at the Regent Theater at 614 N. La Brea for a free screening of the film, "The Fighter," which tells the tale of Boston boxer Micky and the whispers for a Best Picture nomination are rather loud. Which is awesome. And you'll be hanging with people from the movie, so you can't really lose there. That's at 6PM.

Each one of these books is handmade and unique. Inside you'll find pages of the book along with your blank drawing or writing pages, which I LOVE. They have such a warm nostalgic feel to em, and that's what I'm all about!!

Sanrio kicked off their 50th anniversary celebration last night with the private opening in Santa Monica...what a night!! Here I've posted ALL my photos, in hopes that it will excite you and make you get out there for one of their MANY themed nights through November...it's a must see...

The celebration includes a Sanrio Themed Art Show with 50/maybe 60 artists (mentioned HERE) which I was so pretty pleased to be a part of. All the artwork was amazing, please go see for yourself!

Kickin off the weekend in style is Greg Simkins with his new show Story Tellers at Gallery 1988. While you're there amongst his brilliance, you can also get your hands on a copy of his new book Drawing From The Well which from the looks of it is going to be am~A~ziiiiiing...(Lookit Greg's serious face HERE)

And Johnny KMNDZ Rodriquez's got the featured spot for the Thinkspace 5th Year Anniversary show on Saturday - Johnny busted out a special installation piece that'll SHOOT THE MOON (and have you dumb-struck in it's presence) - it measures ... something huge and if you look real close, you'll find a hidden message that Johnny incorporated straight from the mind of yours truly ~ and my better half!

Where has the time gone?! Halloween's in just two days?? I've been so busy I've lost track of time it seems...

I wish I had at least two more weeks before Halloween, I love it so much. When it's over, it's on to Christmas for me, and I'm gonna miss all the Halloween inspiration. So here's to a great Spooky HALLOWEEN on Sunday!!

Inspired Choch-Keys

Living in Southern California can be a bummer at times for a girl who loves rain and gloomy skies ~ but we've got some gloom as of late, and even some rain and THUN! So happy to see some Fall weather like when we were kids, especially as we approach my favorite of favorite Holidays (aside from Christmas...i think)!!

So Halloween it is inside my four walls ~ pumpkins, masks, skeletons, lights, cats, candy...I have too much stuff stuffed everywhere, and half this stuff is up all year...(what?)

And in the way of Halloween Children's books, here's two more I picked up for to selfishly gobble up! The Halloween Kid by Rhode Montijo is beautifully simplistic in all it's traditional orange, yellow and black...

Here's Ryan Heshka's Welcome To Monster Town in all IT'S greens, yellows and blues ~ my heart actually squealed inside my chest when I saw this at Barnes and Noble amongst the usual boring uninspired children's Halloween books...(sorry, but most of em are pathetically flippin dumb)

Ghosts, Goblins, Vampires, Clowns, Skeletons, Pumpkins, Cats, Frankensteins, Zombies, Werewolves, Mummies ~ even pirates (all done just right) surely ring my bell somethin awful as I've said before.

(yeeeeeee~)

And this little Glow In The Dark Yeti from Gamma Go is brilliantly perfect in every way, I had to add it to this post. BUT ~ if you run out and grab one up for yourself, be warned that the legs don't move to sit down as they seem to appear - I broke his little leg off the second I got it home trying to make him sit for me on my desk...bummer.

And in addition, might I add that my lovely little friend Lola (Of Lola Fine Art) has joined the good folks over at Hint Mint (the Original Designer Mint) in effort to shed some beautiful light on Breast Cancer Awareness in their Art For Awareness Series. Her tin is pretty as the Dickens so if I were you I'd run out right now and getcherself one'a these little ladies before they disappear!! (it says You Need This Mint) Shag Of Shag has done his part as well for BCA, so start runnin!!

Baby Tattooville came and went after a whole year of anticipation...and all I have left are the memories...

The biggest thank you to Bob Self ~ the mastermind behind the insanity, and to all the attendees and artists that make it possible. It ruled, once again.

Tattooville Goodies

Just got back from the 4th annual Baby Tattooville at the Mission Inn in Riverside...{hooooo~weee}, what a great time! For those of you who are familiar with my blog, you already have heard about this event, and how much it means to me. Well, this year, with such a powerhouse line-up of artists, (Robert & Suzanne Williams, Ron English, Coop, Van Arno, etc, etc, etc,...) I wanted to do something extra special for the giveaway bags each paying attendee receives at the end of the weekend...

...so I busted my hump on a 60 piece set of hand~drawn original graphite and colored pencil playing cards (paper mounted on wood panel), wrapped in plastic and fixed with a bow. For me, it's a pleasure.

I also hand~stiched two new plush black cats to be included in the Baby Tattooville pop up store (that just gets better every year!).

I do delight in Halloween, so for me, the pleasure of making these items this year was immense!! Now on to decorating my place here, which was delayed from all the creating for Tattooville...boo. Photos of the event itself will follow shortly...stay tuned!!

Sneaking and Creeping

Here. I'm gonna sneak in some shots of what I've been working on and in a week I can share the whole thing...

This coming weekend I'll be going to Baby Tattooville. For those of you who don't know what that is (which is probably most of you), Baby Tattooville is a weekend retreat of sorts, consisting of 10 featured artists and 50 of their biggest fans (it's sold out!). It's brilliance lies in the insane imagination of book publisher Bob Self of Baby Tattoo Books (the same Baby Tattoo Books that published my book So Good For Little Bunnies).

I was one of the featured artists in '08, and since then I've been addicted to the buzz and excitement and mystery of the event. It really helped me come out of my shell a whole lot, and I really appreciate the fact that Bob gave me that. He is a man amongst men - I love 'im!

You can be sure I'll be snappin shots the whole time and sharing upon my return! For more insight on last years hallaballoo, LOOKY HEEYA.

Hiddey-Ho! Here's my latest installment of Sketch Theatre sketches - this little dandy was created at Comic Con in about 20 (real time) minutes. Comic Con is so crazy! See how it unfolds BEFORE YOUR EYES in about a minute!!

Now back to work...I'm working on some sneaky secrets for Baby Tattooville which will come crashing down on me in about a week's time! (wooot) After all the hooplah has come to an end, I can show you all what I've been bustin my bones on! Til then, watch the egg...

Fall Of The Blackbird

Here's a new piece I finished early this month that I never shared with you. This is the first piece I've worked on since my solo show in June (aside from drawings and a private commission). It's called Fall Of The Blackbird, acrylic and ink on wood panel. I had a spot of trouble with this piece, but I'm super stoked on the way it turned out. It's weird how some pieces fight you the whole way, and others just let you have your way!

Come Go With Me

I don't care what you're doing right now, go see Mindy's show (with her dear sissy C. J. Metzger) at the WWA gallery in Culver City! We were able to get up to LA for her opening Friday night and it was a seriously rootin' tootin' good ol' time!

Saw some friends, had some laughs, explored the sisters' latest works - as should YOU!!

Then on Saturday it was Costa Mesa (Orange County?!) for the Bigfoot show at H Space by Hurley for more celebrating art and good friends!

It's good to have sillyness around you when your job is to be creative...priceless moments with priceless people = more and more inspired insanity!

Hope all is well out there, as always - so happy to see more Halloween goodies out in the stores!! I'll be going on my ritual hunt soon, for Halloween decor and chotch-keys. (no, I don't know how to spell that) And as I mentioned before, keep your eyes peeled for the release of my special edition Halloween Print coming soon!!
